Industrial Engagement

National Instruments

Sinead Brady, Field Sales Engineer at National Instruments, delivers the National Instruments workshop each year to the new cohort of REMS Students.

Since 1976, National Instruments (www.ni.com) has made it possible for engineers and scientists to solve the world’s greatest engineering challenges with powerful platform-based systems that accelerate productivity and drive rapid innovation. Customers from a wide variety of industries – from healthcare to automotive and from consumer electronics to particle physics – use National Instruments’ integrated hardware and software platform to improve the world we live in.

The seminar focuses on Condition Monitoring and Predictive Maintenance Systems. We are all challenged to increase customer confidence, product quality and revenue; lengthen maintenance cycles and reduce costs; stop unscheduled outages; and optimise machine performance. However there is no ‘silver bullet’ condition monitoring system.

During the keynote presentation, students hear a global perspective of condition monitoring challenges across many industries, concentrating on the application of off-the-shelf technologies in the highly bespoke world of condition monitoring.

During the second part of the seminar, students discover first-hand how to develop applications using NI LabVIEW Real-Time and LabVIEW FPGA programming tools and NI CompactRIO hardware. By exploring these leading-edge design tools, the students have the opportunity to develop a reliable and deterministic application that will integrate a continuous monitoring system with closed loop control on a single platform

DNV GL BLADED Workshop

Alec Beardsell, Wind Turbine Design Engineer delivers the DNV GL Bladed Workshop each year to the new cohort of REMS Students.

DNV GL is a global player in the maritime, oil & gas and energy sectors and also ranks as one of the world’s largest renewable energy consultancies. Operating in more than 100 countries, our 15,000 professionals are dedicated to helping our customers make the world safer, smarter and greener. Uniting the strengths of DNV, KEMA, Garrad Hassan and GL Renewables Certification, DNV GL’s 2,500 energy experts support customers around the globe in delivering a safe, reliable, efficient, and sustainable energy supply. DNV GL is uniquely placed to offer technical and advisory services to the marine renewable energy sector, combining a rich legacy in marine engineering with over 30 years of experience in wind power. DNV GL provides technical consultancy services to manufacturers and developers across the wind, wave and tidal power sectors and has undertaken detailed performance assessments on over 30GW of onshore and offshore wind farms spanning more than 15 years of operation. We also offer a range of dedicated software tools including Bladed – the world’s leading wind turbine aeroelastic simulating package, Tidal Bladed, WaveDyn, Windfarmer and others.

This workshop introduces Bladed, providing an outline of the theory involved and offering participants hands-on experience using the software to perform a range of typical calculations using a representative wind turbine model. Participants will learn how to configure a structural turbine model, generate representative environmental inputs, run calculations, and review simulated data.
